What’s New With the Nintendo Switch 2

After countless leaks online, Nintendo finally stepped forward and announced the Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo will discuss the Switch 2 further in a Nintendo Direct on April 2nd, 2025. Many fans don’t feel there is enough of a difference between the Switch and Switch 2. Let’s dive in and review some differences.

Switch 2 New Design

While the presentation to display the new Switch 2 was short, there were some changes to the overall design. First, the display screen is much larger and has an adjustable kickstand on the back. The joy-cons are magnetic, and the designers toned down the vivid colors of the previous design to appear behind the joystick and on the side. In the released trailer, there is a moment where they show the joy-cons being moved around like a computer mouse.

Backward Compatible

According to Nintendo’s website, the Switch 2 will play physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. This is an exciting development for Nintendo and rewards those still enjoying certain Switch games but will want an upgraded console. Some games will not be compatible, which makes sense for games like Ring Fit Adventure, which require additional tools to make the game work.

Specs and The Price Tag

Nintendo has not yet confirmed details on the console specs, but with such a larger console, it would be safe to assume that they will be significantly better than its predecessor. All that we hope for is that our Animal Crossing won’t lag anymore as we walk around!

The price tag is another difference between the two devices. According to Forbes, a news site, there have been several leaks and rumors regarding the price, all between an estimated $399-$499. This is a significant price hike from the $299 the Nintendo Switch sold for upon its release and even more prominent from the Switch Lite at $199.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is reportedly bigger and better than its predecessor. While the console looks similar, key differences promise a new modern design, backward compatibility, better specs, and a higher price.
